Soul riding- early season on a remote South African beach

There is a time to reap and there is a time to sow.

If you plan to compete in the Northern Hemisphere summer, this is “Ice Cream and Beer season!”

Use this down time to recharge your batteries. Visit family and friends, catch up with work (I know, a few weeks on Kona and/or Maui wrecks havoc at work) try a new sport, (or two), put on a few pounds, have those corn dogs you tried to steer clear of during racing season.

To be fully motivated for dedicated training next spring and summer AND fall, -depending on your goals- you need a good off season:

Stay active. Dont become a total couch potato. Try a new sport, or play with ones you like. Dont feel like you have to train and become fit or fast or accomplish anything other than having fun. 2 or 4 somethings a week is just fine.

Refresh. Your body, your mind and your soul. Everyone is different. I like some light mountain biking with my dad and some heavy dirt biking in the bush. Amber likes running with Kona (our dog) and skate skiing.

Plan. Start dreaming about next summer. What would you really like to do? How would you get there? Are there races, events, equipment that will help you get there/enjoy it more? Dont feel you need to fix a schedule right away, just gather your thoughts, you have bags of time. Besides, the 2009 XTERRA race schedule isn’t even out yet!

Amber is doing the USAT Level I coaching course now, and we are putting our coaching plan together, and should be up and running in January with a questionnaire and application form.

Till then- have fun

Conrad

Love the thought on an off-season. Recharging the batteries. This is great stuff to read because its real unlike other stuff that says take 20 minutes for an off season then kick it back into race mode. I happen to like ice cream and beer so i’ll take your advise Conrad! Cheers big ears!
