I’ve been an athlete all my life. I ran track and cross country at 8, raced BMX and played rugby, cricket etc as a little boy. But at age 14 I did my 1st triathlon and I was immediately hooked for life. I couldn’t finish high school quickly enough before racing 6 seasons in France and a dozen in South Africa. (non drafting road triathlon) I was self coached, lived from hand to mouth, and slept on train stations often as a young pro.
Libby Burrell coached me to the Sydney Olympics, which was the turning point in my career. In 2001 I traveled to the USA for the non drafting Olympic distance races, but also to give XTERRA a try. I fell in love with triathlon all over again. That year I won my 1st XTERRA World title, and went from rags to actually making a living from triathlon.
Labeled the “King of XTERRA” after 8 years of XTERRA domination, having raced at World level since 1991, and having had the honour of training under Libby Burrell since 1998.
Apart from my experience, I have a simple, fun first, no nonsense outlook towards training and racing triathlon.

I started in the sport of triathlon at a relatively late age of 25. Up until that point I was a somewhat active university student. I tried just about every sport from rock climbing to kayaking, but none lasted longer than a season. I was instantly passionate about triathlon and began to learn all that I could about training and racing. I was fortunate enough to have a coach in my second season while training for an Ironman (to this day I claim I signed up on accident-I didn’t know what an Ironman was at the time). My coach helped reign in my training and prevented me from overtraining and injury.
With good basics I quickly climbed through the amateur ranks and began to look for new challenges. With experiences ranging from XTERRA to 3 Hawaii Ironman finishes, let me help guide you through the world of triathlon. I’ve enjoyed every step in the process and would like to be involved in the sport for the rest of my life.
Over the last three years I’ve successfully balanced the responsibilities of a full time nursing career with a training and racing. I understand the time constraints of career and family and can help you prioritize in order to successfully plan your training. I believe triathlon should fit in as part of your lifestyle.
